From Mayor Mike Courts:
I have some exciting news to share with all of you. As many of you know, as the host city to The Home Course which is owned and operated by the Washington State Golf Association and the Pacific NW Golf Association (under the USGA), we are both in spirit and fact "The Home of Golf in the PNW". One of my priorities over the past 2 years has been to encourage golf tourism with DuPont as a destination for golfers. With the addition of several Hotels we have a genuine opportunity to do that. We currently have a program, approved by the City Council and started this year, funded by the Lodging Tax Grant Program (LTAC) that created a stay and play program that is supported by The Home Course and all 5 hotels in the city. This program is going very well and we will be reporting to Council the results soon. Along these lines, we sent our Parks and Recreation Coordinator, Amy Walker, to last years International Association of Golf Tour Operators conference in Miami. We learned a great deal from her attendance at this event that we are now using. This year's international conference is in Bend Oregon next month, where, along with Pierce County, DuPont will be represented with a booth, promoting golf tourism. As part of this year's event, based on our participation last year, we are hosting a "Familiarity Tour" made up of 14 participants from 8 countries who plan and oversee golf related trips. This group will stay at one of our DuPont hotels and golf at Eagles Pride, The Home Course and Chambers Bay. They will be in town 21-23 June. We are working with our own staff, the COA/ROA, local businesses and The Home Course to insure our City puts its best foot forward and showcases all that we have. The City of DuPont welcomes 39,000 visitor golfers each year to our Championship Golf Course, they are great contributors to our City and patronize our local businesses.
