The City of DuPont is undertaking a periodic review of its Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The current SMP was adopted by the City in February 2013. The Shoreline Management Act (SMA) requires each SMP be reviewed and revised on an eight-year schedule established by the Legislature, see WAC 173-26-090. This new schedule requires that all cities and towns within Pierce County complete a periodic review of their SMP by June 30, 2019. The review ensures the SMP stays current with changes in laws and rules, remains consistent with other DuPont plans and regulations, and is responsive to changed circumstances, new information and improved data. The Department of Ecology publishes a checklist of state laws, rules or other applicable documents that have been adopted or amended each year that require local governments to review their SMP for conformance.
As part of the City’s 2019 SMP Periodic Review the City will be preparing a public participation plan, which describes how the public will be informed and involved in the decision-making process for the SMP update. Early and continuous public participation is a requirement of the Shoreline Management Act, and is also required by the DuPont Municipal Code. There will be two open houses (date and time being finalized) for the public to attend and provide comment on the proposed SMP amendments. Public notices will be issued before each meeting in the Tacoma News Tribune, posted on the City website and social media accounts, and emailed to those subscribed to email updates.
