DuPont is a rapidly growing city. As our population swells, so do the number of businesses that operate in the City. As many business owners know, each city has different requirements for acquiring a business license. According to DuPont Municipal Code Chapter 5.04, "Every person, corporation, partnership, or other organization conducting business in the City of DuPont shall, before commencing such business in the City, obtain from the City Clerk a license and pay the fee." All business licenses expire on December 31st of the year they are issued. Each year a business is operating in the City, a new license must be purchased. The cost for a general business license is $50 per calendar year. Any business operated from a home residence, but located within the city limits of DuPont, can apply for a discounted rate. A home occupation business license is $20 per calendar year, as long as the home business revenue for the year is less than $10,000. If the home business makes more than $10,000 of revenue in a year, a general business license would be issued at the cost of $50 per calendar year. Any business operated from a home residence, located within the city limits of DuPont, must also have a home occupation permit. The home occupation permit application is reviewed and approved through the Planning Department. The cost of a home occupation permit is $100 and is a one time only fee. However, after your home occupation permit is issued, and if you change addresses and move to a new residence, you will need to update your home occupation permit for a $25 fee. As we have grown we have had more questions as to what is considered a home occupation by the City. In short, any business that is conducted from your home (within the city limits of DuPont) in which you receive money in exchange for any product or service that you provide is considered a business. The following types of business fall under this category:

Product Consultants

Most of us know someone who is a consultant. They may sell make-up, kitchenwares, candles or a variety of other products, but they all should have a business license with the City. If you are a consultant and work out of your home in DuPont, you will need a business license and a home occupation permit. You may have a consultant that does in-home parties in DuPont; these consultants also need to have a license, as well.

Internet operation

We have had many questions about various internet companies. Whether you are providing internet support or selling products over the internet, if the office or home you are working from is in DuPont, it is considered conducting business in the City.

Lessons

Whether it is language or piano lessons, it is a business activity as far as the City is concerned. Lessons given from your home require both a business license and a home occupation permit.

In-Home Childcare Centers

There are many things that are required from the state to open an in-home childcare center and sometimes a city business license is overlooked. Both a business license and a home occupation permit are required for this type of business.

Hobbies

Taking up a hobby can sometimes turn profitable. Fixing cars, catering, and craft making are great hobbies, but once money is exchanged for the product or service it is considered a business. Please make sure if you start to sell items made in the City, it is considered conducting business. You will need both a business license and a home occupation permit.

Please note that all business conducted in the City of DuPont require a license. If someone comes to your home selling door to door, make sure you ask if they have a solicitor business license. They should have the license in hand at that time. Also, when having an in-home party, please ensure that your consultant is properly licensed. Other licenses available through the City include single 24 hour licenses for special events, such as vendors at the 4th of July celebration, and "peddling" licenses.
